A bit of “101” on chimney repairs

Chimney mortar joints ground out for replacement/repair.

This chimney had mortar joints that were crumbling due to freeze damage (which can be prevented). The joints have been ground out with a diamond blade to a depth of 1″. Click on photos to enlarge.

New mortar placed in joints.

Mortar is prepared with a mechanical mixer. Bonding agent is added to the mix to ensure a strong bond to the bricks. The mortar is placed into the joints using a grout bag, which is an industrial-strength cake decorating bag.

The mortar is then tooled (struck) smooth with a strycker. Click on photo to enlarge.
